Edith Kernerman is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and clinician in Toronto, Canada, who has seen thousands and thousands of babies and their families over the past 21 years.
She was the co-founder and President of the International Breastfeeding Centre (IBC), co-founder and Clinic Director of the Newman Breastfeeding Clinic, (NBC), senior faculty at IBC’s Centre for Breastfeeding Studies, and an IBLCE pathway 3 mentor.
Kernerman speaks internationally at conferences on various clinical and ethical topics in lactation medicine. She has co-developed “Beyond the 20 hr—Advanced Course In Lactation Medicine” a programme for healthcare professionals and she is the creator and founder of the International Meeting of the Minds, a forum where world experts discussed issues in lactation medicine.
Kernerman authored the GamePlan for Protecting and Supporting Breastfeeding in the First 24 hours of Life and Beyond, co-created the L-Eat Latch and Transfer Tool, and created the new Pain Algorithm for Sore Nipples and Breasts. She also co-created the DVD, Dr. Jack Newman’s Visual Guide to Breastfeeding which has been revised and edited numerous times.
Her most recent focus has been in three areas:
– Studying the baby who does not yet latch.
– Creating a diagnostic and assessment tool for tongue and lip tie
– Improving on ways to diagnose and treat Mammary Constriction Syndrome (which she first discovered in 2003 and published a paper on it in the Journal of Human Lactation in 2014)
Kernerman was also the co-founder and past-President of the Ontario Lactation Consultants Association.
She is the mother of three wonderful breastfed children.
